Sensory Bin

Welcome letter F week! Here some ideas for you to incorporate into your classroom that begin with the letter F!

As always we have our outdoor Zoo-Phonics themed alphabet flash cards. The kids LOVE playing imagination, making the rice “rain”, and finding the matching letters on the page I provide them. These are so much fun and the kids NEVER get tired of them.

Forest

This is a great sensory bin to incorporate into a camping theme as well. Super easy to put together and the kids love to watch and listen to the rice fall through the logs.

Flamingos and feathers

Love this pop of color that the feathers added! I found all of my flamingo items at the dollar tree during summer time. Snag it before it’s gone!

Science

Fine Motor

Sometimes when I plan curriculum, I add an activity that I know the kids aren’t going to be wild about, but is a necessity for them to learn/work on. I thought this was going to be one of those activities, and BOY was I wrong! 😂 The kids did not want to leave this station. It was so great to see them all working on their fine motor skills.

Peek-A-Boo Sensory bags

There are many ways to use this activity, here is what I did.

  • Laminated my images page and checklist
  • Tape the images page to the table to secure it
  • Remove the label on the ziploc with rubbing alcohol so the bag is completely clear
  • To a large ziploc add your filler: Paint, shaving cream, water and food coloring etc.

👆🏻⭐️The thinner the substance the easier the activity, the thicker the substance the more challenging the activity

  • Place the bag on top of the image page, and tape around all edges ensuring it is tightly sealed to prevent leaks
  • Have kids use their hand to move around the filler and find the images
  • Cross off each image on your checklist as you find it

You can also add this to the bottom of a tray with some flour, rice, etc.

Fireworks in a jar

This is a great activity to practice patience with. Typically I use shaving cream which takes MUCH longer to break through, this time I used baby oil 👍🏻

👉🏻To a jar add water about 3/4 of the way. Fill the rest with oil, any will do.

⭐️Measurements don’t have to be exact. Different ratios will just change timing for the fireworks to drop

👉🏻Add drops of food coloring to the top and wait for the fireworks to break through

👉🏻Watch the colors disperse through the water as they break through the oil.

Flower life cycle

Saved the best for last! If you follow me on Pinterest you may have seen the videos of me making each step of this activity. I LOVE the way it turned out! I have recently been obsessed with making these activities and still have more in mind, so stay tuned 😎.

Use the sorting cards/charts to discuss and sort the different steps and parts of a flower and its’ life cycle. Incorporate the no prep worksheets to extend/review the activity.

I have come to find, the best activities are when you can take previous activities, tweek them ever so slightly, and then call them something else. Who else loves minimal prep 😂🙋‍♀️

This set is from my Italian food restaurant that I used for around the world week.

Flower shop

This is yet another activity I tweeked to create this beautiful set-up. Can you guess what I used it for last?

From the dollar tree I grabbed some flowers and a foam block so the kids can create their own arrangements. Great for fine motor!

Sensory Bin

Welcome to Letter E week! (Also the week of Halloween 🎃). You know the drill, let’s start things off with the outdoor sensory bin! These cute little elephants are versatile for many themes through the year: Circus, safari, around the world etc.

You can find them here

Here are some of the MANY ways you can use them!

  • Add one set of the alphabet to a sensory bin and lay the other on a table or the floor, dig through the sensory bin to match them!
  • Hang one set of the alphabet around the room, and have the child tape the match beside/below/above/underneath/behind/on top.
  • Spell their name
  • Spell sight words
  • Find something in the room that starts with….
  • Etc.!

Earth

  • Blue colored rice
  • Green colored pasta wheels
  • Loose wooden parts

This was a last minute idea that I thought was going to turn out much cuter…let’s just say I’ve done better things with the sensory bin 😂 The kids still loved it though!

Eyeballs

I always look forward to using these eyeballs! Is it just MY preschoolers, or are all of them obsessed with eyeballs? 😂

Dramatic Play

Entomologist

This is always an easy one for me, because we always have these items in the class. This year to change it up, I used Canva to create a cover for the entomologist reports, and stapled some blank pages inside. It was so cute to see them use these printed cameras to take pictures of the bugs!

Eye Exam

This one was fun to set up. I have mentioned in previous posts that when I repeat an activity, I try to add something new to make it a little different. This year I added colored tape to the glasses for variety, changed the location, added kaleidoscopes, prescriptions and fake magazines. So yes, the original was just the eye charts and the plain glasses 😂.

Earth Patterns

These pattern cards can be easily made on Canva or even powerpoint.

Use any type of block or object that corresponds with the colors of the patterns. In this set there are 24 cards total with a variety of patterns: A, AB, ABC

Elephant Toothpaste

Letter E is one of the more challenging letters for me to create actual science experiments with. There is one that I LOVE doing every year and that is elephant toothpaste! It’s a MUST!

  • 1/2 a cup 40 volume hydrogen peroxide with 12% “hair developers.”
  • 1 1.2 teaspoons of dry yeast (baking isle)
  • 3 Tablespoons warm water
  • Food coloring
  • Variety of glass jars for different visuals
  • A tablespoon of dish soap (any will do)
  • A tray

Step 1: Mix your yeast and water and lit sit for a few minutes until frothy

Step 2: Add a few drops of coloring down the inside of each jar. I do three colors.

Step 3: Add your dish soap to the jars

Step 4: Add your hydrogen peroxide/hair developer to the jar and place in a deep tray/dish

Step 5: Add your yeast mixture to the jars one at a time to see the reaction. KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE

⭐️🚨DON’T TOUCH THE FOAM AS IT’S AN EXOTHERMIC REACTION AND IS HOT! After several minutes, it does cool down.

Egg Ghost

This experiment is always perfect timing for Halloween! It does require some prep ahead of time. Soak your eggs in an equal mixture of tonic water and vinegar for about 4-5 days. When you remove the eggs you should be able to gently rub the shell away, creating the illusion of a ghost!

Solve the case-Halloween Edition

As I’ve mentioned letter E took place during Halloween week. So I passed this off as Halloween EDITION, or process of ELIMINATION. These solve the case files are so fun! I have tons of themes, as well as digital versions.

Super fun play based preschool activities that begin with the letter D

Sensory bin

If you have read my past few blogs you will know that I always start off with the outdoor sensory bin. Each week I swap out the sensory bin to match the new letter of the week theme. This week is all about the letter D. These are the modernized Zoo-Phonics alphabet flash cards I have in my TpT shop for Deedee the Deer. Check them out here.

I used brown rice as my filler and separated the uppercase from the lowercase. Place these fun letter identification pages out, for the kids to find and cross of each letter!

Dogs

For this sensory bin I ended up throwing in some doctor tools, because everything else was doctor themed that day, so why not?! 😂

  • Dog food

Add all materials to your sensory bin and have kids play and discover!

Dolphins

This was a last minute set up 😂 I had something else planned but thought we did that one too often so I decided to switch it up. (Which happens often lately).

  • Blue button mix (I got a different ones from amazon and mixed them together)
  • Etc.

The dolphins I used are from another activity/center that I had from the summer, but you can easily just print and laminate some, or use toy dolphins.

Dirty Dishes

Easiest set up ever! Throw your toy dishes in the sensory bin with some water, soap, and sponges and I PROMISE the kids will stay there forever 😂👍🏻.

Science

This is more like my territory 😎. This is the table that I lead each day. Our preschool has 5 teacher led activities: Art, numbers/letters table, science, dramatic play, and sensory bin. Sometimes at science we do other things that aren’t really science…but that’s just the way we roll 😜.

Doctors

This activity is so fun and great for fine motor skills!

  • Pipe cleaners
  • Paper towel holders
  • Pool noodles
  • Dish gloves

To assemble, I cut a piece of pool noodle to fit the length of the paper towel holder and placed it on. (This will provide stability and support for your glove) Then place your glove over the pool noodle. Cut pipe cleaners into different sizes and have kids apply “stitches” to their patients by twisting pipe cleaners around the different parts of the glove.

Dino Dig scavenger hunt

I LOVE these so much! They might be my favorite thing I’ve ever created…but then again I say that about a lot of the activities I create 🤷🏼‍♀️😂.

Print and laminate your scavenger hunt pages, and polaroids (Link is provided in the listed materials)👆🏻. Add some flour to dish/tray and add a layer of the polaroids. Repeat this step until all polaroids are scattered and covered with flour (Any filler will do, this just felt most dinosaur like to me). Have kids use their paintbrush/tools to dig and discover the polaroids, and then match them/mark them off on the page.

Duck color matching

So here’s what I mean..what category does your school/class put colors in? Usually we filter it in to the science area, sometimes it ends up at numbers and letters. Hey, as long as they’re playing, learning, and having fun, that’s all that matters to me!

There are several ways to teach this lesson. Usually I have them try to read the color on the card, and then we find the matching duck. Once we have those we color the correct one on the page. You can also just have them displayed like the images below, and see if the kids can find and match them on the page to color the ducks correctly.

Digging for Diamonds

I know, I know, I say this a lot…but this activity is SO fun! I used an oobleck mixture, added the diamonds and jewels, and let it dry overnight. In the morning it was hardened, and the kids used tools and their hands to try to dig the diamonds free! Once they had all of their diamonds out, I added a little more water so they can play with the oobleck mixture 🤩.

Oobleck: Mix equal parts of cornstarch and water until you get a consistency where its a bit difficult to dig but once you do, it just melts. I ended up doing a bit more corn starch than water in order for it to harden over night.

Decorate the Desert

….Dare I say it? 😂 It’s SO MUCH FUN! I just love watching their little imaginations create and play on these pages! You can find them here.

Print and laminate pages and fill a tray/basket with loose parts. I used fake succulents, snakes, scorpions, and lizards. Have kids use their imagination to create, build, and play in the desert.

I feel like I use this one way to often 😅. All you need is a play doctor set and you’re good to go!

Donation Center

I did this activity during the summer for kindness week and thought it was too cute to not use again!

  • Brown paper bags
  • Donation items

Label each of your bags: Time, money, food, and toys. Set out some corresponding items and have kids donate!

Donuts

Who doesn’t love a donut? Especially if it’s a maple bar 😍. Any time I do this activity, I try to put it somewhere different in the room so there’s a little variety. This time I used this cute display shelf we have to showcase our donuts, and then set out the coffee and milk props. So much fun!

Happy Halloween! I am SO excited to share these super cute preschool activities with you! Your kids are SURE to love them, and they’re fairly easy to set up!

For sensory bin I created a spooky water beads mixture. Here is what you’ll need:

To make water beads follow package directions. Add all materials to the sensory bin and play!

Next up we have science center. I originally I had a different plan for Halloween but it didn’t work out, so I whipped this up and LOVE it better than my first idea! Super easy to set up and a great last minute idea if you need a back up plan or extra activity.

Print and laminate your pages, and use loose parts to make faces on the 12 different Halloween characters! I am using my Halloween button blend from my fine motor center, but you can use any loose parts in your class or quickly cut some shapes from construction paper.

Sensory bin

I just love creating new activities each week that the kids can enjoy! This week is letter C and was so much fun! My favorite is definitely the cloud science.

This week I changed the outdoor sensory to C for cat! I have a Zoo-phonics themed line in my TpT shop for the alphabet. Here is my modernized version of what I call Catina Cat 😂.

Cold

The theme here was cold. I threw this together last minute. We had plenty of stuff around the room to add to the bin.

  • Cold weather clothes

Construction

This pasta filler is one of my FAVORITES I’ve created, however I only get to use it about twice a year 😂. I grabbed a variety of pastas that I thought resembled construction tools, and then colored them orange, brown, black, gray, and yellow. I just love seeing AND hearing these in the class.

Cupcake

Sometimes, I scratch an original thought I had because I don’t like it any more and come up with something on the spot. This was one of those days. Not my best work, but the kids seem to love these the most 😂

Science

Our science area focuses on critical thinking, problem solving, and fine motor as well as many other things. It’s sort of an array of things if you will 😂

Clouds

This was my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! So much fun!

I used the tallest can of shaving cream from the dollar tree with the blue lid. Make sure it is NOT the gel kind! You can easily create this label on Canva.com. Tape your labels around your shaving cream can, place your blue table cloth on the table for easy clean up, and display your cloud chart. Discuss the types of clouds and have kids create them on the table!

Chicken Life Cycle

I might be a TAD obsessed with life cycle pasta sorting 😂. I just love this activity so much! Have kids sort the pasta life cycle using these super cute sorting cards/charts here.

Construction Scavenger Hunt

Okay… I know I’ve said this about the past few activities…but I also LOVE this new scavenger hunt line I have created! There are pages from A-Z for printable scavenger hunts!

Fill a dish/tray with filler of your choice. Hide the polaroids inside and have kids find them, match them and mark them off! You can also hide the polaroids around the class/outdoors and have them mark off the images they find.

Connect The Color

Okay, you guess it…this is also a favorite 😂. What can I say? I picked all of my favorites this week! These worksheets are from the series Back to Basics, and it’s All about colors. There are 100 pages total, and work great for a busy binder, review/prep, and assessment. Have kids identify which color they need to connect and use the correct color to connect the dots. There are 3 lines on each page: 3 dots. 4 dots, and 5 dots.

Car Colors

So I know this doesn’t technically qualify as science, but as I mentioned we do an array of activities at this station.

Dramatic Play

Who doesn’t love imaginative play? I love setting up these areas, they are so much fun! Watching the kids play in them, EVEN more fun 😍

Butterfly life cycle

Full assembly directions can be found in the life cycle sorting cards download. Color your pasta, mix when fully dried, and sort your steps as you discuss the butterfly life cycle.

Bug under the rug

If you have not played this game you are missing out! The physical version hides a child under a blanket “bug under the rug”, and the students guess who is underneath by identifying who is missing from the group. A great circle time game! This is the printable version and can also be great for circle time or for science centers.

Balancing

This was the EASIEST set up I have done. We recently purchased these stacking stones from amazon…and I am in LOVE! The kids use fine, and gross motor skills, in addition to problem solving and focus to stack and balance the stones. I then added some blocks in for an additional challenge.

Baking Soda Surprise

  • Food coloring
  • Baking Soda

  • Pipettes

Add a layer of baking soda to a dish, and then drop various colors of food coloring all around. Cover with another layer of baking soda. Have kids use a pipette to drop vinegar onto the baking soda and watch the colors emerge.

Alphabet-Alligators and swamps

Every week I swap out the outdoor sensory bin for a new one. I always have a set of the alphabet inside for the kids to practice with, but let’s be honest they just use the pictures for imagination play 😂. This week I tried something new, I added these scavenger hunt pages! Pick up a letter from the sensory bin, and find it on the page. Be sure you are crossing off the correct letter (uppercase or lowercase). They LOVED this so much! I only have 4 printed, as that’s all that can fit around the bin, and every kid was asking for a turn.

To create this sensory bin, I took several different fillers to create “pie pieces” in the sensory bin. I then added several different colors and shapes! So much fun to play with and look at 🙂

Click the here to browse these scavenger hunt pages. Print and laminate your page. Print, cut and laminate your polaroids. Hide them inside of a tray full of flour/sand. Have kids use tools, or their hands, to find the items on the list. Match and cross off each item.

Asteroid Musical cards

Your child will learn to:

  • Enhance listening skills

  • Use problem solving and memory skills
  • Match images (when used as memory)

Directions:

⭐️Print double sided on thick paper

⭐️Lay your cards image side down

⭐️Hands up, listening ears on!

⭐️Play a song, and then randomly stop

⭐️When the music stops, the players put their hand on a card

⭐️On the count of 3, flip them over

⭐️If you get the asteroid, you’re out

⭐️Remove a card and continue until there is only one person left 🙂

It looks very similar to snow so I felt it was perfect for the job. Have kids build mountains with the wax, and then create an avalanche to knock it down.

Chlorophyll scratch-off

I made this page using Canva.com and printed each page on thick card stock. Color your page with oil pastels, and then paint a thin layer of acrylic green paint over each image. When completely dry, use a coin to scratch off the “chlorophyll” and see the fall colors!

I added some rock salt to a jar with some different fall spices: Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Pumpkin pie spice etc. Have the kids scoop small amounts into the mortar, and use the pestle to crush!

Add apples to a Ziplock and freeze over night. Thaw out the next morning for a few hours and have kids use their hands or blocks to crush and squeeze the apples. When they are done, filter it, and give it a try!

Find the Dino!

Prepare your water beads by allowing them to sit in the water for at least 3-4 hours before the activity. The longer the better 👌🏻. (Water beads are at the beginning of the process in the pictures shown) Toss your mini dino and other objects inside. Have kids reach in and try to find the dinosaur! They can close their eyes for more of a challenge.

Although this is not science, I had this for the kids in this center today. Sometimes we intertwine stations to make sure the bases are covered 😉 I made these worksheets on Canva.com! After the child traces their name, have them practice independently. To extend the activity, display letter blocks/magnets/trains and have them build their name.

Aliens

I printed my worksheets double sided to save paper. Use the flash cards to teach children the shape, Have them identify it on their worksheet, and then trace the shape and the word.

Orbiting

Discuss what it means to orbit, and what orbits in space. Have kids place the magnet disc on the starting image (earth for the sun, moon for the earth). Place the magnetic wand under the page as you hold it up. Drag the disc around the circle to make it orbit.

Planet Sensory Bottles

  • Dish soap

  • Food coloring

You can purchase empty bottles on amazon however they aren’t as tall, or find tall water bottles at the store (I have done both and like the taller bottles better) . Save them as you finish the water inside of them. To remove the label and adhesive, create a paste with equal parts olive oil and baking soda, and then rub it all over the bottle. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes and then wipe it down with soap, warm water and a rough sponge. Have kids add glitter/confetti/color to the bottles that represent that planet. Fill the bottles about 2/3 with water and the rest with corn syrup. Add a few drops of dish soap, close the lid tight and shake to mix! Ratios aren’t exact and can be adjusted. The more corn syrup you use the slower the glitter will fall.
