Sensory Bin

Hello and welcome to “P” week! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I always start things off with the outdoor sensory bin. This keeps a sense of routine for the kids.

Penguins

While we’re on the topic of penguins, here is what I did for the indoor play area.

Blue rice as the water.

White rice as the snow.

Magnetic tiles as the ice/igloos.

Goldfish as their food.

Popcorn

Incorporate all 5 senses with this one!

Texture.

Smell.

Taste (if all other materials are clean).

Sound.

and of course sight.

I just dumped a Costco size bag of popcorn in the bin with these fun popcorn buckets, and the kids loved it!

Penguins

A yearly repeat for me. Did I mention I’m OBSESSED with penguins? 😍

  • Black & white crayons
  • Cardstock
  • Free template
  • Blue food coloring
  • Pipette

Have your kids completely color the body of the penguin with black crayon and the belly with white. Once the image is fully coated in crayon. Have them drop blue colored water onto the penguin. Did it absorb into the paper? No! Penguin’s feathers produce a wax which helps them to stay dry/warm in the weather.

Peek-A-Boo Letter P

This can be assembled in a few different ways:

Place a bag of rice/or any filler on top of the page and have kids move the filler with their fingers to search for the image.

Lay the image at the bottom of the tray. Have kids use their fingers or a brush to find the images.

Scribble over the images, and have the kids erase them to find the images.

Play dough press

This was a last minute idea and was so much fun! I think I had more fun than the kids with this one 😂.

Use stamps to spell or build pictures in the play dough.

Pollution

When I was setting this one up, I was a bit hesitant if my preschoolers were going to be interested. I was surprised at their reaction and concern! They gave such great input and solutions to the problems.

Air- I placed a rainbow sticker on the back of the jar. I asked the kids if they can see it. We discussed what causes air pollution and then I used a fog machine to represent the air pollution. “Can you still see the rainbow?” “How can we help to prevent/fix this?”

Land- I added some moss to a jar with a butterfly inside. I asked the kids if they can see it. We discussed what causes land pollution and then we added garbage to the jar. “Can you still see the butterfly?” “How can we help to prevent/fix this?”

Water- I added some blue colored water to a jar with a fish inside. I asked the kids if they can see it. We discussed what causes of water pollution and then we added garbage & oil to the jar. “Can you still see the butterfly?” “How can we help to prevent/fix this?”

Potions

This is hands down on my top 3 favorite activities I’ve done! I made these envelopes out of card stock by folding and hot gluing them.

Step 1 envelope- Confetti/sequins

Step 2 envelope- Feather

Step 3 envelope- Dried rose petals

Step 4 envelope- Bath fizz

We poured each envelope into a jar of water and used our wands to stir/tap. You can say a magic word if you wish.

The last step is bath fizz so when it was added, it bubbled right out of the “cauldron”!

Sensory bin

Of course we have to start off with our outdoor sensory bin. It is such a great tool for letter recognition.

This week’s set is Octopus and ink! A modern spin on the Zoo-PhonicsTM characters. Check out the set here.

Add your cards to a sensory and use the scavenger hunt page to mark them off.

Use the letters to spell names or words.

Place the letter on something that begins with that letter.

So many ways to use this set of alphabet flash cards 🙂

Orange Juice

This was so beautiful to look at, and to smell! I did not use real orange juice because I felt it would be to sticky as it dried. I added orange food coloring to water, with a little bit of dish soap so it doesn’t stain. The magic touch…Orange essential oil! The kids loved it.

The rice is intended to replicate pulp.

You could add real oranges for another element/task, but again I felt that would be too sticky.

Oat milk

So easy, and a tasty treat!

What you will need:

  • Oats
  • Water
  • Sweetener of choice (maple syrup or honey are great)
  • Blender
  • Cheesecloth or nut milk bag
  • Bowl

Add 3 cups of water and 1 cup of oats to a blender with your sweetener of choice. Blend about 30 seconds-a minute until your water turns white.

To a bowl, pour your milk through the cheesecloth/nut milk bag to strain it from the pulp. Squeeze until all milk is strained.

Voila! It’s ready!

Ocean Layers

Discuss the layers of the ocean, and what lives in each one as you put your puzzle together.

  • rubbing alcohol
  • oil
  • water
  • dish soap
  • corn syrup

Add coloring to each layer to create an ombre effect. Layer the liquids in this order, rubbing alcohol on top and corn syrup on bottom.

Oil and Water

This is a go-to every year for me. It’s easy to put together and the kids just love it!

You will need:

  • Oil based food coloring
  • Water
  • Baby oil (I chose this because it is clear and mixes better with colors)
  • Jar
  • Pipette

Mix your a food coloring into your oil, I chose to do three separate colors.

Fill a jar with water.

Use the pipette to drop the oil into the water. Does it mix?

Open ended play-Outer Space

Dare I say it…I LOVE these pages! If you’ve read my past blogs you will know that I use these almost every week. They are a must have for your classroom! Perfect for any age, and have so many benefits. You can read more about them here. Scroll to the Kingdom open ended play to read in detail the benefits of this activity.

This week was outer space.

I used:

  • Green buttons, from my March fine motor center.

No directions are needed. The kids just sit down and do as they wish with them 🙂

It seems like just yesterday I was starting the alphabet. How did we get to letter N already?! As usual, let’s start things off with the outdoor sensory bin.

Night Owl & Moon

Use this hands-on interactive flash card set for learning capital and lowercase letters. Add your abc cards to a sensory bin for a group or independent activity center. They are a great tool to teach students how to recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

Incorporate them into daily/weekly lessons plans to demonstrate initial sounds during circle time.

Laminate this activity and re-use it throughout your preschool & kindergarten literacy centers over the years, incorporate into morning work, or use to enhance reading skills.

Noodles

This was last minute sensory, and all I had were these pasta shapes. I cooked them up, and tossed them in a little but of oil so they didn’t stick together. Next I added some wooden spoons, drops of food coloring (with a drop of dish soap to prevent stains), and some pots and pans with water. The kids squeezed, mixed, ripped, and “cooked” the noodles.

Nest scavenger hunt

Who doesn’t love a scavenger hunt? These are so fun, and a great activity set to prep at the beginning of the year. I have a file folder tub from A-Z in storage, where I have all letters prepped for easy lesson planning. Just pull one out and you’re good to go! This is the letter N from my A-Z set. You can check it out more here.

I typically alternate how I hide the polaroids. Sometimes I give them independent baskets, sometimes I do them as a group basket. I chose to do individual this time, so I can replicate a birds nest with this beautiful neutral beans and rice mix that I made.

Have the kids search for a polaroid and match them to the page or mark them off.

Nails

Sometimes I forget how much I love this activity. It does go pretty quickly, so I slow it down by only handing them a few papers at a time. One side of the paper has a hand with no nail polish and the other side has a hand with nail polish.

To a tray or dish with water, add the paper with the colored nails face down. Watch the color bleed through and the nails will change color!

Newspaper musical cards

I like to think I made this game up…but who knows how many classrooms this already exists in 😂. I definitely thought it up by myself, no help from Pinterest. Can you believe it?! Ha ha.

It is exactly how it sounds. Musical chairs, but with cards!

All of the cards lay image side down. One card is the “out” card.

Kids raise their hand high as the music plays, and then grab a card when it stops.

The person who got the “out” card is out! Keep going until there is only one left.

This particular time I wanted to try something different. I gave the kids a code word to listen for as I told a story. When they hear the code word they have to grab a card. It was definitely more challenging for them.

Nautical

It’s safe to say…lately I like taking the easiest path possible ha ha. We have these sea stars and shells in the science area, so I decided to display them on the table with different tools to analyze and compare them. I don’t know why I’m always so shocked when the kids LOVE these last minute ideas.

Necklace open ended play

Remember that A-Z file folder tub I talked about earlier? This is another set I have stored in there! So extremely versatile and beneficial to developing minds.

⭐What is open ended play?

It is a way to play without any structure or guidance, allowing the child to explore without the fear of mistakes. The child is allowed to express themself freely and creatively without judgement or micromanagement. They will enhance cognitive development, social and language skills, problem solving and more.

⭐️When choosing the loose parts I always aim for at least 5 different items with different textures, sizes, and shapes.

⭐️I simply leave the display on the table and let the kids take it from there. They chose their own mat and what to build on it. Of course they are going to ask “What are we doing?” “What is this?”. I first ask them, what they think. I then let them know what the page looks like to me, and they take it from there.

⭐️The best part about these pages, is that they are for ANY age! We have a range of 2-5 in our class and they all love these pages. I’m sure even up to age 8 would love them. Hey, if you as the teacher want to do them I won’t judge .

Sensory Bin

Here is our outdoor sensory this week! I used gray rice as the base, and added my set of mouse and cheese alphabet cards. You can find them here.

Macaroni

Super easy set up for this one. I used orange rice as the base (cheese). I then added dried, plain macaroni noodles and some cooking tools. The kids pretended to make mac ‘n cheese. Yummy!

Magic forest with mushrooms

This one was SO beautiful. I just adore these little lights from Amazon! I used green rice as the base, and added some moss. Tossed in some wooden gnomes, trees and mushrooms as well as logs. Gave the kids burlap bags to fill, and then turned on the lights!

Mermaid Open ended play

These pages can be used for many themes, and for many occasions!

  • rainy day
  • birthday party
  • group or independent activity
  • summer indoor play
  • and more!

To a basket I typically pick at least 5 different loose parts with a variety of shape, size, and texture. For this particular page, I used: buttons, sea plants, jewels/treasure, pompoms, shapes, & magnet discs.

The purpose of this activity is to encourage independent play, without structure or guidance from a teacher. They will discuss amongst the group what they are doing and make decisions of their own without the fear of judgement or messing up. This gives the kids an avenue to express themselves freely and openly.

Magnets

We LOVE magnets! I didn’t give much guidance here. Just simply displayed all of the magnets and played alongside them.

For the jars of water, you can use the magic wand from the outside of the jar to lift the pieces up and out!

Place a magnet wand under the table to move pieces around and create “magic”.

Movie Theater Scavenger Hunt

How cute is this activity?! I added a variety of yellow pompoms to a bowl to replicate popcorn (although, you can use real popcorn if you would like). Next, I mixed in the polaroids; 6 sets so each child has their own. The kids took turns digging through the “popcorn” to find and match the correct image on their page.

Magic Milk

If you have never tried this science experiment, grab your milk from the fridge now! It is so fun, and calming!

  1. To a tray add a small amount of milk
  2. Next drop some non-gel food coloring around the milk (not too many, be sure not to crowd them)
  3. Dip a Q-tip or your finger tip in some dish soap, and lightly touch the drops of color
  4. Watch as the milk disperses and swirls on its own!

I LOVE this activity for so many reasons.

The list can go on! I got this huge pack of fabric squares from Amazon as well as the clothes pins. You can find wire shelves at the Dollar Tree. Add them to a sensory bin with a little water and soap and have the kids wash and hang the laundry!

Science

This is an activity I began to do every year since 2019 for letter L week. It is so much fun and I can’t believe the leaf is still in there!

I have the kids pick a leaf from outside. Making sure it is completely dry, I place it on the page and ask them to name it and to tell me why they picked that leaf. Why is it special? Then I laminate it and send it home with them.

Laundry

Scavenger Hunt pages for the win! If you’ve read my last few posts you know how much I rave about these. They are so much fun, and can be assembled in a variety of ways.

I remembered we had this little washing machine stored in our shed, so decided to use that for a visual element. I placed a tray with blue rice (“water”) inside of the machine with the hidden polaroids.

One at a time the kids came up and picked out a polaroid and matched it to their page. The rest of the kids had to find that same image scattered on the table and match it as well.

Lunch

Yet another winner in my book! The second staple to my simple curriculum planning 😂. Open ended play has so many benefits, I go over them in my letter K blog. I love that all ages of the class (2 1/2-5) are interested in this activity and each kid does a completely different thing. A great rainy day activity for some peace and quiet. 👍🏻

Sensory bin

Who doesn’t love a good sensory bin? They are so great for learning many early childhood skills: fine motor, gross motor, visual motor etc. I always have a weekly outdoor sensory bin that is pretty simple; Rice and alphabet cards! The kids love it. Some of them sit and actually learn the letters, some of the use the pictures for imaginary play. Some don’t even touch the cards and use the rice as “rain” 😂. This weeks theme was the letter K. You can find these abc flash cards in my TpT shop here.

Kabob sensory

This is always a repeat for letter K, it is easy, fun, and I can switch up the materials to make it “new”. One year I had them use marshmallows, another was gummy Krabby Patties. This year I used these over sized shape beads, the only time they get used haha. The base I used orange rice, dried red pasta and threw in some yellow pasta wheels to replicate fire. I have used torn up red, blue, and yellow tissue paper in the past.

I promise, all you need for the year are my scavenger hunt pages, and my loose parts pages and you’re set 😂. I’m the type of person that always feels the need to create something new each time, how dare the kids have a repeat activity haha. However, I have to say, I have been loving having these 2 staple activities lately. I prepped all of the letters A-Z before the school year started, so all I have to do now is just pull them out and they’re ready! They make great activities for rainy days as well. I have been trying new ways to display the scavenger hunt, they really enjoyed this set up. They are obsessed with the mini trash cans from the dollar tree!

Keepsake jars

Oh my, was this a beautiful set up 😍. It’s a lot more simple than it looks. I went on Canva.com and printed a free template for the display, and then used elements of that template to create the cards. There are tons of free templates to choose from on Canva, all you have to do is set up a free account.

For the jars, I had these mini corked jars from months ago that I never got to use. I believe they were from amazon, but any jar or bag will work.

I then added some pink rock salt to the mason jars and a few drops of essential oil.

The kids used the wooden spoon to transfer the salt into the mortar, and then used the pestle to crush it up. They then ripped some of the olive leaves and stuffed them inside.

Once their jars were completes, we put the cork inside and taped it to the card. So cute!

Kinetic Sand

If you don’t have kinetic sand….get some! It is so fun and a great change up from play dough.

I gave the kids a large amount of sand and 5 square magnet tiles.

They first created a box with no top out of the tiles.

Then they filled the box with sand.

The final step, they took the top magnet tile and placed inside of the box, on top of the sand and squished down. This created a kinetic sand cube!

Kingdom open ended play

Open ended play, imaginary play, loose parts play, whatever you want to call it….you need them in your life! As mentioned above, they have become one of my staples!

What is open ended play?

It is a way to play without any structure or guidance, allowing the child to explore without the fear of mistakes. The child is allowed to express themself freely and creatively without judgement or micromanagement. They will enhance cognitive development, social and language skills, problem solving and more.

This set up is in the theme of Kingdom. There are 6 different scenes so the kids have a variety to choose from.

In the loose parts basket they have: Wooden trees/gnomes/people, variety of buttons, dragons, stones/rocks, potpourri, knights.

When choosing the loose parts I always aim for at least 5 different items with different textures, sizes, and shapes.

I simply leave the display on the table and let the kids take it from there. They chose their own mat and what to build on it. Of course they are going to ask “What are we doing?” “What is this?”. I first ask them, what they think. I then let them know we are learning about letter K this week and this is a kingdom. Since we do this almost weekly now, they kind of get the hang of it.

The best part about these pages, is that they are for ANY age! We have a range of 2-5 in our class and they all love these pages. I’m sure even up to age 8 would love them. Hey, if you as the teacher want to do them I won’t judge 😂.

Jellyfish alphabet match

Every week I change the outdoor sensory bin to a new set of Zoo-Phonics themed alphabet cards. Kids can discover, match, and find uppercase and lowercase letters. Check them out here.

Boy do my kids love dinosaurs! I could set this up everyday and they would never get tired!

Every time I post this activity i just HAVE to state it for the record….I LOVE THESE PAGES!!! They are so much fun and I love seeing how creative the kids are with out any guidance. They are intended for open ended play and incorporate STEAM/STEM skills, decision making, and more. Check out the A-Z set here.

The set comes with 6 different jungle scenes for variety. Laminate your pages for reuse. You can provide each child with a different basket of loose parts, but I just use the same parts with different pages. When choosing your parts, I encourage you to be creative and pick different sizes, shapes, and textures. You will be amazed what a kid can do with a handful of buttons!

I display the pages and provide a basket of loose parts. I let the kids take it from there! They choose their page and what to do with it.

Jewel thief

We love a good game of musical chairs…only we never use chairs 😂. The kids are pretty fond of a game I created, I like to think I created it anyway, called musical cards. I know, I’m probably not the only one who has thought of this genius idea. We are always finding new ways to play.

I placed one ring in a jewelry box and closed it. The kids raised their hands high and I played a song. When the song stopped, they placed their hand on a box. Whoever had the ring inside was the jewel thief and was out! Continue this until there is only one person left.

Peek-a-boo page

These are so fun and you can tailor them to any age group! This time I had the younger kids come to the science center so I made the bags easy to see through. I added food coloring and water to a bag with some glitter. Sealed it tight, and placed it on top of the laminated page. The kids touched the bag and moved the glitter around to find and mark off each image.

I will admit, this was a challenging one for me. Thank goodness it fell on a week that was short 😂. This was the week leading into Thanksgiving, so we only had 2 days worth of activities. As always, let’s start with sensory bin!

For the outdoor letter match sensory bin, I used my Zoo-Phonics themed Inch worm alphabet match. You can get them here.

Island

Every time I create this one, I change it up a bit. Typically I place mounds of plain oats in sections to replicate islands. However, I had just made this batch of blue rice and didn’t want them to get mixed up. (I try to reuse my fillers as much as possible). So I used these super pretty rocks from amazon as the island instead.

Science

As I mentioned…it was a short week 😂. We are already at science!

Island-Loose parts, open ended play

If I haven’t said it in previous posts, I LOVE these!!! I have a whole set A-Z in my TpT shop here and they are ABSOLUTELY something you need in your home/class. Kids will stay busy for hours!

This was so much cuter in person. Combine 2 cups of corn starch with 1/2 cup of baby oil. Add glitter if desired. Have kids use the fake snow to build igloos!

Horse sensory bin

This set of horse alphabet flash cards is from my TpT shop, and is my spin on Zoo-Phonics characters.

Place your cards in a sensory bin, and have your kids search for, identify and match the letters. This activity covers the Kindergarten common core standard CCSSRF.K.1d.

Color sorting houses

This set of color sorting houses can be found on amazon. Have the kids sort the colors correctly, you can even add other loose parts with similar colors to extend the activity.

Who doesn’t love a good hamburger or hotdog? Super easy set up! I added my green colored rice as the filler, and some play food to the bin.

This one is SO fun, and I always do it every year! Cut some pipe cleaners into different sizes, and tape a face (with no hair) to a magnet wand. Have kids collect the magnets at the top of the head to create hairstyles!

I had these printouts from last year for loved ones/family theme, so I decided to have the kids use Lincoln Logs to build houses on top!

Honeycombs/hives STEAM

I ABSOLUTELY ADORE these pages! This activity is so much fun and produces so many different results from each child. Loose parts are perfect for encouraging open-ended learning. These types of lessons enhance decision making skills.

For this set of pages I used:

  • Yellow pompoms, different sizes and textures
  • Honeycomb pieces
  • Mini bee erasers
  • Flower buttons

Display the pages and the loose parts and have kids build and decorate the page!

Hammers

Trust me…your kids will love this 😂. You can use a plethora of things to smash with a hammer, today I chose play dough. What’s great about this activity is I had kids of all ages (2-5), and of all energy levels, that were super engaged. I had balls of play dough rolled out for them to smash at the start, I then encouraged them to roll the balls themself with different sizes.

Hair cuts

I always see this activity floating around pinterest, and have always thought it was so cute. I started making pages that had faces with different lines for the hair that they would cut, but then I thought it might be fun to use textured scissors to see what they would create on their own! It worked out perfect!

Hot air balloon

Of course I had to save the best for last. Hot air balloons! SO much fun and so easy to prep.

I used mini plastic water bottles, but regular will do just fine. You will just have to use more vinegar.

⭐️Add vinegar to the bottles, I used different amounts in each bottle so we can compare results.

⭐️Add baking soda to a balloon, again I used different amounts. The best results were with the full balloon pouch/bulb filled.

⭐️Secure the balloon onto the bottle without tipping the baking soda in just yet

⭐️Hold the base of the balloon to secure it, ensuring there are no holes or gaps.

⭐️When you are ready, have kids tip the balloon upright, dumping the baking soda into the bottle and watch the balloon expand!

⭐️We analyzed which bottles had the most vinegar, made predictions of which would be the largest balloon, and then voted if the balloons would actually float or not.

Sensory bin

We LOVE having this sensory bin outdoors each week. The children learn letters while they use their imagination to build and play. This week was gorillas and bananas-a modern take on the Zoo-Phonics character Gordo Gorilla.

Giraffe

Not much to this sensory bin! I used oats as my filler and grabbed a few giraffes and leafs. Simple and they loved it!

Garbage

For some strange reason, my kids have an OBSESSION with garbage 😂. They love when I put out these mini trash cans that I snagged from the dollar tree. If you see them grab them! They will go fast.

Science

Guess who?

Oh my cuteness this activity was fun! Great for farm theme as well 👍🏻. I don’t typically have the younger kids in the science area, so I was wanting to incorporate some more activities for the 2-3 age group. They LOVED this! There are so many ways to extend this activity.

  • Print, cut, and laminate your cards
  • Have kids look at the cropped image on the front and then guess who is in the barn
  • Open it up and see!
  • Match the animal inside with the cards provided

We added our farm animals to this activity and they matched those animals as well. After they matched them all, we went over animal sounds and sang “Old MacDonald”.

Geology

I recently took a trip to Montana to visit family and came across these BEAUTIFUL rocks/geodes/crystals in a small shop, (they can be found almost anywhere). I thought they would be perfect for a science activity, and I was right! They kids LOVED seeing all of the colors and using the different magnifying glasses to analyze them. I also purchased chocolate rock candies that look like real rocks as a fun treat.

As I mentioned…My kids love trash! This is a great activity for group or independent lessons, and can be used for several themes: i.e. community helpers, Earth Day, environmental etc.

Print and laminate your pages and cards and have kids sort by material and color.

Gelatin

I do this activity every year for the letter G. It is so great to watch the kids eyes light up as the colors burst into the gelatin.

  • Prep your gelatin the night before (It must be plain with no color)
  • Add food coloring to some water

Have the kiddos use pipettes to squeeze the colors into the gelatin and watch as they burst inside.
